Banheiros

Bathrooms

From the lowest rooms, by Artur de Vargas Giorgi

In a house, in any house, maybe the bathroom is the weirdest room to the visitor: some of the people’s privacy is exposed there; something at the limit, obscene, low, prohibited. And such exposition of the others’ intimacy inevitably stirs inside the visitor, some intimate as well impulses, contraditory, simultaneous: curiosity and shyness, attraction and aversion. The bathroom of a house, most of the times a small space strictly limited to the essential, appeals to a greater closeness and identification to the host and at the same time impels us to the biggest possible distance, denial and difference.

From my point of view, one of the bathrooms of the House/Casa is enticing: what was already there – the luminosity that emphasizes the elements (I visited the House/Casa in a sunny afternoon, on the closing day), what was altered – shampoo and soaps, a towel of vivid color and the mirror over the sink: a video object showing several mouths – singular lips : thick, thin, dark, light colored, feminine – using, continually, lipsticks of different colors that are just there, behind the small mirror aside, ready to open. There is a possibility that this attractive and false mirror that not exactly reflects but offers images of others than “Me” (there is a projector in the opposite wall) is accomplishing, before our visit, an erotic gesture: as if this bathroom of the House showed us the desire – of each one, of the other – that could turn – inspite of any present conciousness, into a plan or final object – as images that don’t need to be looked at in order to exist or seduce. We arrive and stay in front of them : one “I” and they – an image with each other, in a meeting that is always as much loving as combative, made of surrending and resistence. From this bathroom, this House/Casa, strange, ephemeral for everything that attracts us and repulses us, is one of our places of being : the non domestic.
